Bart Scott opines on the Pro Bowl, which he hasn?t made since 2006

New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott, never one to shy away from a microphone, got in a bit of hot water recently when he said that he played football "so my kids won't have to." People tended to be offended by that thought, because such statements are generally made by people who work under much tougher conditions. Nonetheless, Scott was unbowed by that blowback, because he had some rather incendiary words for Roger Goodell after Goodell expressed concern about the level of play in the Pro Bowl.

"I really didn't think that was the kind of football that we want to be demonstrating for our fans," Goodell said in February. "And you heard it from the fans. The fans were actively booing in the stands. They didn't like what they were seeing. We're either going to have to improve the quality of what we're doing in the Pro Bowl or consider other changes or even considering eliminating the game if that's the kind of quality game we're going to provide. I know players love to be in Hawaii, but we have to start with the quality of what we're doing.

"If the fans are responding negatively to what we're doing, we better listen. And that was my message."

Consider Scott unimpressed.

"For him to want to comment the Pro Bowl was before his reign and it will be after his reign," Scott told the New York Post on Thursday. "It's not up to him, I believe, to cancel the Pro Bowl. It's tradition. It ain't about that. ? You can't make someone go out there and blow their knee out. I'm not going to blow a receiver up coming across the middle. It's the offseason. Why? It's an exhibition game."

[ Y! Sports Fantasy Minute: Fantasy football sophomore stars ]

Now ... while Scott seems like a genuinely good guy, and we in the media always prefer outspoken players, this one is a bit confusing. Why? Because Scott has made exactly one Pro Bowl -- back in 2006, as a alternate, after his then-teammate Ray Lewis decided not to go. He certainly deserved it that season with 78 solo tackles, 9.5 sacks, and two interceptions, but since then, he's been shut out of the process.

Nonetheless, he's very unhappy that Goodell thought about shutting the event down.

"What is he talking about? Tell him to get out there and put a jersey on," Scott ranted. "It's a part of the fabric of football. It's a celebration for everyone to enjoy and get their families out. They've earned the right to be an All-Star."

That said, Goodell isn't the only one to wonder about a game in which the offenses are tuned to Arena League and defenses are on the Madden "Rookie" setting. After the game that followed the 2011 season, Aaron Rodgers took after his NFC teammates in the wake of the AFC's 59-41 "win."

"I'll be honest with you," Rodgers told ESPN 540 in Milwaukee. "I was a little bit disappointed. I felt like some of the guys on the NFC side embarrassed themselves ... I was just surprised that some of the guys either didn't want to play or when they were in there didn't put any effort into it."

Rodgers also added that playing at a reduced rate can be a dangerous thing.

"I've always found that when you're going that tempo, that's when the injuries are going to happen, not if you're going full speed," he said. "You're more likely to get an injury standing around a pile or just going through it half-speed."

New England Patriots guard Logan Mankins spoke from the side that sees more logic in the "flag football" nature of the game. "I don't know how you fix it," he told ESPN in February. "You're going to give a little effort, but you're not going to get out of control. Some guys are free agents over there. You get hurt in a Pro Bowl and it's going to affect that contract with another team. Who would want to get hurt in a Pro Bowl and not be able to play the next season?"

Given Goodell's reactionary nature to just about everything, that would be the one thing that would have him cancelling the Pro Bowl for good. If a Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Calvin Johnson got hurt in a game that isn't even as useful as a preseason contest? You can kiss that game good-bye -- and it seems as if many already want to.

Perhaps it's time to make that week what it really should be -- a glorified vacation for the players most deserving. They can hang out in Hawaii, do some skills competitions, and give the NFL Network something to program before the Super Bowl hype gets going.

We'll even let Bart Scott show up.

Seahawks trade for Kellen Winslow; hope to make 2-TE sets more productive

In 2011, per the game-charting of NFL.com's Brian McIntyre, the Seattle Seahawks put two tight ends on the field 39 percent of the time, one of the highest figures in the NFL. However, they didn't get much production from those tight ends. Former Oakland Raiders tight end Zach Miller, acquired as a free agent before the 2011 season, caught just 25 passes on 44 targets for 233 yards and no touchdowns -- Seattle's injury-weakened offensive line put Miller in a position to block most of the time. Despite that, Miller led the team in all categories at the position.

On Monday evening, the Seahawks endeavored to become more productive with the 2-TE sets they prefer by trading for ex-Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Kellen Winslow. For assuming Winslow's contract, the Seahawks gave up just a seventh-round draft pick in 2013 (conditional sixth if Winslow meets certain performance guidelines). Winslow has three years left in a six-year, $36.1 million contract he signed in 2009, but the $3.3 million he's due this season in base salary is not guaranteed.

The eight-year veteran was deemed expendable by new Bucs head coach Greg Schiano after missing a recent round of OTAs, and it was Winslow himself who revealed the news -- last Saturday, Schiano told him that the Bucs were looking to make a deal and get him out of there. In his place, the Bucs signed former Indianapolis Colts TE Dallas Clark to a one-year deal.

[Related: Trading Kellen Winslow could be risky for the Buccaneers]

"It's kind of shocking, but that's what it is," Winslow told Ross Tucker of SIRIUS NFL Radio on Monday morning. " [Schiano] said he was upset that I wasn't working out with the team in the offseason, and then, the first week of OTAs. But, look -- I've been there the last three years, and I've had a successful career so far, and you just don't get rid of one of your best players because of that. That's just what I was told, but I have nothing bad to say about coach Schiano -- it was just a disagreement on why I'm not there yet. I was training in San Diego, and I was going to start [in OTAs with the team] today, but I got the call on Saturday that they're looking for somebody else."

Winslow was especially surprised, given his claim that he has participated in a team event before in this preseason. "There was a previous minicamp -- I went to that. It was a three-day minicamp and then, I came back down to San Diego to train, and I was going to start [back with the team] today."

According to Winslow, he flew cross-country from San Diego to Tampa to hear that he was going to be gone. "They tried to catch me before I left, but that didn't work out."

[Related: Detroit Lions bar own player from practice after fight with teammate]

In Seattle, there is room for a player as productive as Winslow has been in the recent past. Drafted sixth overall by the Cleveland Browns in the 2004 NFL draft, Winslow most recently averaged 72.6 catches, 792.3 yards and four touchdowns in each of the last three seasons for Tampa Bay. In 2011, he was the fourth-most targeted tight end in the NFL -- only Jimmy Graham, Rob Gronkowski and Brandon Pettigrew had more footballs thrown in their general direction by their quarterbacks. He played through pain on a right knee that has seen six different surgeries, and though the sheer physical upside is limited at this point in his career, Winslow seems a good risk for a Seattle team in need of far more consistent production from his position.

Aaron Rodgers hopes to be a ?Packer for life?; could be even better in the process

Aaron Rodgers knows what it's like to be humbled, and he knows what it's like to be great. He didn't receive a single Division I scholarship offer out of high school and had to go to Butte College in his hometown of Chico, Calif., before Cal picked him up a year later. After an impressive college career, he then had to sit behind Brett Favre in Green Bay for three interesting years after dropping to 24th overall in the 2005 draft. He learned patiently behind Favre, and he watched as Utah's Alex Smith, taken first overall by the San Francisco 49ers (the team Rodgers loved as a kid), struggled mightily.

We know the story from there. After Favre's first of many retirements in 2008, the Green Bay Packers became Rodgers' team, and he's put up the kind of numbers you see from people who are messing with cheat codes on Madden. One season after leading the Packers to their fourth Lombardi Trophy, he had one of the best years any quarterback has ever enjoyed -- 343 completions in 520 attempts (68.3 completion percentage) for 4,643 yards, 45 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He led the NFL in touchdown percentage (9.0) and yards per attempt (9.2).

Now, at age 28 (just a few weeks younger than Cleveland Browns first-round pick Brandon Weeden), the man who recently told the Green Bay Press-Gazette that he wants to be a "Packer for life" stands on the precipice of a host of similar seasons. There's no reason not to believe that he'll be one of the game's great players for years. Anyone who believes that Rodgers will slack off in the face of success doesn't understand the slights that drive him.

"I think it's a little bit less of that now and more of remembering where I came from and remembering the path I took to get here, which the doubters were a part of that," Rodgers told the Press-Gazette, when asked about the motivation given from those early struggles. "But just remembering the journey and where I came from as a high school player in Northern California going to junior college, being a backup at Cal, and remembering the hard work that it took to get to where I am now. That's kind of more of a motivator than the doubters because I realize as hard as it was to get to this point, it's going to be just as hard to stay and maintain at this point."

Like Tom Brady, another Northern California kid who came up the hard way, Rodgers now has it all at his disposal. A coach in Mike McCarthy who operates in lock-step with his own talents, the best receiver corps in the league, and a formerly befuddled defense strengthened in the 2012 draft by defensive linemen Nick Perry and Jerel Worthy. Green Bay's first-game elimination from the 2011 postseason at the hands of the New York Giants was disappointing after a regular season that saw just one loss, but Rodgers also knows that this team is primed to get back to the biggest game more than once.

"The healing process begins when you're able to leave, for me, when I'm able to leave Green Bay and get away from it, and kind of get settled into the offseason. It's still frustrating. It's not fun to watch the playoffs knowing you want to be in the game instead of athome watching. But that was a case of you're playing a really good team and you can't turn the ball over four times. That happens. Unfortunately it happened at the wrong time for us."

With three years left on his current contract, Rodgers is far away from the kind of stress currently going on between Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints -- not that he expects that to happen down the road.

"I think they're an organization who is going to do what's best for the organization. Obviously my representation, just like any representation, is trying to get the most money possible at times. I don't see it being an issue. I want to be a Packer for life and I don't see myself going anywhere else. I don't think they would even get close to that. When the negotiation time does come I have confidence in my representation and I know we're going to do a fair deal, it's fair for them and for me. And hopefully I'll feel good about it."

According to Football Outsiders' similarity scores, the most exacting career arc for Rodgers is that of Joe Montana, Rodgers' childhood idol. He's put up better numbers than even Montana did, but Rodgers also knows that until he's got more than one or two rings, that debate isn't even worth creating.

Firmly established in his own right and excited about the future, Aaron Rodgers knows just what he wants that future to look like. "I have accomplished a lot individually and now it's all about winning some more championships."

And there's no end in sight. "I think it's got to be a combination of how my body feels and I've said it a few times over the years, when I'm not committed to being a 100 percent offseason guy, then that's probably when I should step away from the game because these guys deserve 100 percent of my effort and time."

UPDATE: Charlie Sheen didn?t buy Lawrence Taylor?s Super Bowl ring

Sadly, the rumor was just that. The news that Charlie Sheen was the man who bought the Super Bowl ring once belonging to Lawrence Taylor and auctioned by LT's son is not true. Fox Sports insider Jay Glazer first reported that Sheen may have purchased the Super Bowl XXV ring for $230,401.20, including buyer's commission. Not so fast!

Sheen was the one to confirm this on his own Twitter account: "RE: Lawrence Taylor's Ring: As much as I would be honored to own such an important artifact... I had nothing to do with the acquisition." Sheen also confirmed with "The Dan Patrick Show" on Friday morning that he was not the man.

[ Y! Sports Fantasy Minute: Unlucky break for fantasy football star ]

So, who DID throw down that kind of cash for LT's ring? We know it wasn't Osi Umenyoira, because he didn't hit the Twitter follower landmark it would have taken for the current Giants defender to make the move. Osi fell far short of the 500,000-follower number, and reacted accordingly when he heard of the final bid.

"Yikes! I guess the 450,000 let me off the hook!"

Indeed.

Michael Jackson Lives On In 'Immortal' Tour

Cirque du Soleil show pays tribute to late icon with world tour.

<P><B>NEWARK, New Jersey</B> &#8212; Music, dance and acrobatics combine in celebration of <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a>'s iconic life in the "Immortal" World Tour. From trapeze artists to acrobats and even a world-champion pole dancer, guests at the Cirque du Soleil show can expect a high-energy tribute to the legend.</P><P>The tour stopped for two nights in Newark, New Jersey, this past weekend (its 40th stop) and will open Tuesday night (April 3) at New York's Madison Square Garden, where it will remain through Thursday. From there, it will continue across North America through the summer before heading to Europe in the fall.</P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:755805/cp~vid%3D755805%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A755805" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center></P><P>Having already produced the <a href="http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/shows/love/default.aspx" target="_blank">Beatles "Love" show</a> in Las Vegas, Cirque is no stranger to musical tributes.</P><P>"Immortal" serves as a sensory explosion that starts on the subdued side and progresses in both spectacle and energy. More than 60 artists perform to 32 songs in a presentation that feels much like a concert with an ensemble of circus-inspired acts elegantly melding together. The stage is two levels with a long peninsula extending into the audience, where the majority of the acrobatics takes place. MJ's famed choreographic style was present in nearly all the numbers, and the audacious task of the performers was well-received by the audience.</P><P>The progression of the musical numbers moved seamlessly. The energy kicked into high gear with Jackson-like characters performing "Fanatics Medley" as Jackson 5 &#8212; one of them in MJ's signature fedora and another as a gold-suited mime. Jackson's youth was remembered in "Childhood" during which a recording of Jackson's voice referred to his early stardom as he sang, "Have you seen my childhood?/ It's been my fate to compensate/ For the childhood I've never known."</P><P>While the moving screens, elaborate stage designs and detailed costumes were impressive, one of the most awe-inspiring moments was witnessing what the human body is capable of during the pole-dancing number. Felix Cane, a two-time world pole-dancing champion, maneuvered in the sky dancing on a pole &#8212; with no harness &#8212; appropriately performing to "Dangerous," as the audience was captivated by her every move.</P><P>Another highlight was "Human Nature," during which the back screens were dominated by Neverland graphics and an image of a young Michael sitting on the moon. In front of the backdrop, a half-dozen artists wrapped in multicolored LED costumes soared through the air in sync, representing the constellations.</P><P>"Beat It" got the crowd moving while they watched performers in MJ's signature accessories, including his famous glove and penny loafers, dance in dynamic movement. A rock-infused duel between an electric guitar and electric cello capped the song.</P><P>After an elaborate performance to "Black or White," as the night seemed to be over and the audience slowly started spilling into the aisles, the lights illuminated one last time for an encore to "Man in the Mirror." The artists appeared to take a bow in front of exploding fireworks.</P><P><i>Have you seen "Immortal"? Share your review below!</i></p>

I?ll Have Another gets a roommate

I?ll Have Another gets a roommateThings will be getting a bit more crowded in the stables for Triple Crown hopeful I'll Have another but trainer Doug O'Neill is just fine with that.

O'Neill received word on Friday that his horse will be allowed to have Lava Man join him in the stables, getting the approval of Belmont Park's stewards to allow the horse to stay with I'll Have Another as a companion leading up to Saturday's big race. The 11-year old Lava Man boasts over $5 million in earnings and with a Goodwood Breeders Cup Handicap win in 2006 to go along with twice taking the Santa Anita Handicap, the veteran horse should be a steadying presence for I'll Have Another.

O'Neill was also the trainer of Lava Man.

"Monday will be the soonest and we are going to have Lava Man there which is great," O'Neill said on Friday."They're used to be being with their buds and being in a barn all by himself, even though he can handle that, they are going to let us have Lava Man there, at least he'll have a buddy."

But as good as the news about Lava Man becoming his horse's roommate this week, it was steady as it goes for I'll Have Another as the Triple Crown hopeful went through another light day at Belmont Park, just days away from this weekend's Belmont Stakes.

The plan for I'll Have Another, who is hoping to be the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978, is to gallop and jog and not go through any formal workouts. O'Neill was pleased to see his horse's "beautiful stride" on display on Friday.

"He goes about a mile-and-a-half with the last part of it, he puts his feet where he wants and stretches himself. It's been his routine, his daily routine," O'Neill said.

"Unless we have any hiccups where he can't gallop for a day or two, there's no need to work him."

The Friday morning workout was less congested than usual as the New York Racing Association closed the track for a portion of the morning for everyone but O'Neill's horse and a handful of the other entrants in the Belmont Stakes. The opportunity to get a stress-free workout in pleased O'Neill.

"It was awesome, it was so cool and we got the chance to see a couple of other Belmont hopefuls out there as well. And they looked great out there, it was a great experience," O'Neill said."I think it's a safer environment for everybody because a lot of the other horses aren't used to the press and the media and it's not fair to those horses and the exercise riders."

The competition has thinned out for I'll Have Another as Alpha, who finished twelfth in the Kentucky Derby, withdrew on Thursday after developing a fever.

"He spiked a temperature on Tuesday evening," trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said. "[It was] 103. He was fine by 11 P.M.. that evening after treatment, fine yesterday, and he's fine today, but it's too high a temperature too close to the race. It's unfortunate."

The user?s guide to two-start pitchers, Week 10

At this point, my dream for Ryan Dempster is that he'll be the Cubs' lone all-star representative in 2012 without actually winning a game. The possibility is still in play (although Castro and LaHair are potential problems), but he'll somehow need to clear the upcoming two-start week without earning a win. It won't be easy, since he's facing a pair of sub-.500 teams, one of which is actually sub-.400 (Minnesota).

Dempster's current record is 0-3, yet he's posted terrific ratios (2.90 ERA, 1.15 WHIP) while delivering six quality starts and striking out hitters at his usual clip (8.24 K/9). Unfortunately, the Cubs have scored two runs or less in five of his starts this season. Thus, he's 0-3.

So is this the week he dents the win column? Dunno. But you can expect his typical contributions in every other category. Feel free to use him if you've got him.

Rickie Fowler?s game disappears on Sunday at the Memorial

Let's be clear here: One round bad round won't make or break Rickie Fowler's career. Despite blowing up on Sunday at the Memorial, he'll still go into the U.S. Open as one of the favorites to win at Olympic Club.

But we'd be remiss if we didn't at least touch on what has to be the worst round of the 23-year-old's career. Playing in the penultimate group with Tiger Woods on the final day, Fowler came completely unglued early on, going four-over in the first eight holes to set the tone for a truly forgettable round.

And it only got worse from there, as Fowler came home in 8-over 44 to finish the day with an eye-popping 12-over 84. To put the round in perspective, there was a 17-shot gap between Fowler's 84 and playing partner Tiger Woods' 5-under 67.

There's no doubt Muirfield Village was playing tough on Sunday. But it wasn't playing 80-plus shots tough. You could easily chalk up the poor round to Fowler playing in his fifth tournament in six weeks, but if you look at the disparity between his scoring average on Saturday and Sunday, it paints the picture of a golfer who's still struggling in the final round.

[Related: Tiger Woods wins again, and for now, that's enough]

After the 84 on Sunday, Fowler's Sunday scoring average is 71.91, compared to 69.84 on Saturday. That's a full two-shot difference.

Should we be worried about Fowler's final round struggles? Probably not. The kid should get a lot of credit for posting four consecutive top-10s in his last four events (including a win) before this week.

But even with the recent performances, it's hard not to look at how poorly he's played ? especially with some of the top players in the game ? and wonder what the heck is going on.

"One of those days," Fowler said after his round. It certainly was. While it'd be easy to dwell on the round, the best thing he can do at the moment is forget about it and look ahead to the U.S. Open.

Madden ?13 will include ?Tebowing?

Forget the new schemes and routes, the advanced player modeling, and the always-impressive realism of the Madden game. The question you've all been asking has now officially been answered: Will we be able to "Tebow" as we're playing Madden '13, which will be released on August 28?

The answer, apparently, is an affirmative "yes." If you choose to celebrate a great play by getting on one knee as the Jets' quarterback does, you'll be able to do so in a virtual sense. Michael Young, the Creative Director and Sports Photographer for the Madden game franchise, let the cat out on Twitter:

That's all well and good, but here's our question: Where are the other celebrations? Where's Steve Smith's little rowboat end zone thing, or Chad Ochocinco's Riverdance? Moreover, why doesn't the NFL have a problem with this, as paranoid as they are about their players expressing themselves no matter the circumstances?

What we do not know is if other players will be Tebowing in the game, or whether the gesture will be the sole province of the man himself. As the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback over the second half of the 2011 season, Tebow got to run that namesake move quite often as he helped the Broncos to an unexpected playoff win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The move then caught on across the country, in some truly bizarre ways.

Video: Spencer Levin awkward follow-through is a sight to behold

The one-handed follow-through is a weekly staple on the PGA Tour. Even if you catch only a couple of minutes of the TV coverage each week, you'll almost certainly see someone in the field going through with one hand after a poor shot.

Well, friends, Spencer Levin took the one-handed follow-through to a new level on Saturday at the Memorial. The current leader in the clubhouse by one-shot hit a poor tee shot on the 17th hole, torquing the club around his body to the point that it ended up smacking into his right hand.

You have to be pretty flexible to make that happen. If you're looking for a new favorite for the "craziest one-handed follow-through" award, this one has to be a front-runner.
