Spin Doctors: Chris Johnson vs. Trent Richardson

Workhorse running backs may be endangered, but Chris Johnson and Trent Richardson are two rushers destined to keep the species alive. Though both are deserving of first round consideration, fanalysts Brad Evans and Brandon Funston believe there's a best horse to saddle up. Peruse. Ponder. And throw in your two cents in the comments section below. Also sign up for a Yahoo! league, cash or free, NOW!

Evans Leads: Everyone can admit last year was an abominable year forJohnson. The artist formerly known as CJ2K morphed into CJ2Lame, racking one demoralizing performance after another. Sizable holes rarely materialized. Hundred yard games were few. Touchdowns sparse. Arguably, the popular top-five pick was the biggest bust in virtual pigskin.

Don't expect a repeat.

Johnson is still relatively young (27), incredibly versatile ? he grabbed 57 passes last year, the third-most among RBs ? and insanely fast. Though he tended to stutter-step behind the line a season ago instead of attacking it, the former rush king is destined to again don a RB1 crown. Tennessee's offensive line, which received a much needed face-lift this past offseason with the addition of Pro Bowl guard Steve Hutchinson, should be light years better than it was a year ago. That accompanied with offensive coordinator Chris Palmer's desire to incorporate more old school Run 'n Shoot-styled plays will bolster Johnson's scoring potential greatly, especially with Kenny Britt back in the fold and rookie Kendall Wright added to the mix.

And you know CJ is hungry.

This spring, Johnson has worked his tail off, motivated to regain his rightful place among the league's elite. Propaganda from Titans GM Ruston Webster:

"C.J. has looked great," Webster said. "Looks like he's added a little weight, looks strong, especially in his upper body. He's been here every day competing, working hard. He's been here some days when he hasn't had to be here. ... It's really good to see that commitment from him."

Richardson is a marvelous talent who, based on expected workload alone, deserves late first-round consideration in 12-team leagues. No doubt he could grind out 1,400 total yards with 8-11 touchdowns in hisinauguralseason. However, question marks surrounding the passing game along with the Browns' daunting division ? keep in mind he'll play Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Cincy twice each ? lowers the bar somewhat. Overall, the offensive environment simply isn't as friendly.

Both backs should have outstanding seasons, but the Noise plans to score Johnson on the rebound.

Funston Reacts: Let's start off by dispelling the notion that great fantasy running backs can't come from terrible offenses.

Last season, Maurice Jones-Drew was the No. 3 fantasy back despite playing in the worst offense in the league. In '10, Peyton Hillis was the No. 2 fantasy running back for the fourth-worst scoring offense. Marshawn Lynch went all Beast-Mode last year for the fifth-worst offense in the league, scoring a TD in 11 straight games. Frankly, It's not too hard to find examples of elite fantasy production from a running back on a bad team.

Then there's the silly idea that experience is so vital at the running back position. The running back position is arguably the easiest position on the field for a young player to assimilate. What matters most is talent and opportunity. If you have enough of both, you end up with rookie campaigns like Marshall Faulk (1,804 YFS, 12 TDs), Edgerrin James (2,139 YFS, 17 TDs), Adrian Peterson (1,609 YFS, 13 TDs), Clinton Portis (1,872 YFS, 17 TDs), Johnson (1,488 YFS, 10 TDs) et al.

The Browns have already confirmed that Richardson will be their featured back. There's a reason why so many teams showed an interest in trading up for the No. 3 pick in the draft to land him. He's regarded as the best RB prospect to enter the league since Peterson. He's got the complete package of skills and the fire-hydrant stoutness to compete with backs like Arian Foster, Ray Rice and Jones-Drew for the NFL lead in touches in '12.

Johnson was the No. 16 fantasy running back last year, a colossal bust no matter how you slice his season. He rushed for more than 64 yards just four times. He averaged 49 rushing yards and failed to score a TD in the final four weeks of the season. I was a Johnson owner last season and, frankly, I'm not eager to hop aboard that train again. I'd much prefer to see what this Brown can do for me.

Showdown, Week 22: Steve Stricker vs. Luke Donald

So in an attempt to inject a bit more life and interest into tournaments, and because we're all inveterate gamblers who are one bad card from being out on the streets, Jay Busbee and I are playing a golf version of a football suicide pool: We each pick one golfer per tournament and see how they do against each other, straight up. Victory over the other guy gets one point, victory in the tournament gets three points, and a tie between two of the three lands you half a point. (Double for the majors.) And when we burn a golfer, he's done for the year. We turn our attention to the Memorial.

Wall: I open my big mouth and look what happens: Busbee picks the guy who wins the tournament. So much for the Showdown rout! Since someone already took my pick for this week, I guess I'll roll with Steve Stricker. Aside from being the defending champ, his last nine rounds at Muirfield have been under par. Plus, he already has a win and 4 top 10s this year. I like my chances at Jack's place.

[Jonathan Wall: PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament has a major feel]

Busbee: Score! After a victory last week thanks to Zach Johnson, I'm riding high. And I'm going to keep on riding high with Mr. Luke Donald, because, hell, he's the No. 1 player in the world and this isn't a major. Donald is coming off a victory, and yes, he'll be coming off a transoceanic flight, but I'm thinking he'll still have enough game to acquit himself on Jack's home turf.

Last week: Busbee picked up a much-needed two points with a Zach Johnson win at Colonial. Wall selected Rickie Fowler, who despite finishing a respectable T-5 for the week, couldn't keep the win streak alive. That means we're all knotted up at 3.5 points heading into the Memorial.

Current score: Wall - 3.5, Busbee - 3.5.

Already Used: Wall - Gary Woodland, K.J. Choi, Martin Laird, Nick Watney, Lee Westwood, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler. Busbee - Nick Watney, Webb Simpson, Bill Haas, Ben Crane, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Zach Johnson, Luke Donald.

Kings? Willie Mitchell fights for 1st Stanley Cup, seeks to redefine concussions in NHL

NEWARK -- It seems that most years in the Stanley Cup Final, there's an older player who either is making his first appearance or has played in one without winning a ring. We all remember the quests of Ray Bourque and Dave Andreychuk in years past. In Willie Mitchell's case, the 35-year-old Los Angeles Kings defenseman has played in 719 regular season games and 65 in the playoffs, and now he's finally getting his opportunity to win a championship.

Mitchell was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils, but played only 18 games with the club. His third game in the League was Oct. 6, 2000, the night the Devils raised their second Stanley Cup banner. The then-23-year-old Mitchell saw the jubilation in his teammates and hoped his day would come soon.

"I knew it was a hard thing to do," said Mitchell. "I think sometimes inside you think that some years you have great teams and you think you're gonna get there and you don't get there. There's a lot that goes into it. You gotta be playing good hockey but you gotta be on a team that stays healthy and get on a bit of a roll. I'm fortunate enough to do that. It's definitely taken a while, but it's been a long time coming."

Mitchell last played this late in a season in 2003 when he was a member of a Minnesota Wild team that surprised their way to the Western Conference Final; but in five playoff appearances since, his teams haven't been able to get past the second round.

As Mitchell said, you need good health and a team that gets on a roll to reach the Cup Final. He was on a strong Vancouver Canucks team during the 2009-10 season, but in January of that year he took a hit from Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins and landed into the boards suffering a concussion. He missed the rest of the season and signed with the Kings that summer, but not before he sounded off on the lack of supplemental discipline on the play.

From May 2010:

"I am disappointed in the league, I'm disappointed in Colin Campbell. I am disappointed he didn't rule down anything on the play. That's his job. As we've seen, he's been very inconsistent in how he's handled himself in those situations. I think a lot of times he hands down suspensions and fines on results. I think that's the wrong thing to do."

When Mitchell spoke out then, it wasn't to point fingers or call out then-discipline czar Colin Campbell -- it was what Mitchell believed.

Two years later, he sticks by those beliefs and hopes his talking about his concussion experience opens the eyes of his peers.

But does he believe the supplemental discipline process has changed for the better under Brendan Shanahan?

"I think they did a really good job during the regular season," said Mitchell. "They were swift. They were hard. They came after all those things. Bottom line is when you start getting into larger suspensions it deters players more and teams, for that matter. They don't wanna lose their players and tell their players to play a different way to make sure they stay in the lineup.

"I thought in the playoffs it's been a little bit different. I know the stakes are higher. Maybe it's tougher to do it in the postseason. Obviously Raffi [Torres] had the big suspension because he was a repeat offender, but otherwise they probably haven't been heavy as they've been during the regular season. I'd like to see it stay consistent throughout even though it's higher stakes. With change it doesn't happen overnight and it doesn't with anything in society. But I think if you stick to your guns players will adapt just like we adapt to all the rule changes that have happened over the last 10-15 years."

Mitchell says education about concussions is important for everyone because the effects of brain injuries still aren't understood by those who haven't experienced one.

"That's why I do talk about it and understand how significant it is and therefore players will not put their peers at risk. In the game of hockey that's going to happen a little bit. It's nature of the beast. You sign up for that. I go out on the ice every night and knowing I could get hurt."

Mitchell would like to see one simple change to help the education hit home immediately.

"Personally, I don't like the term concussion as it is. It's minor brain trauma, right?" he said.

"I'd like to see that word changed, but that's just me. I don't like that diagnosis. In hockey we talk about it as a guy got his bell rung, well, it's a concussion, right? It's minor brain trauma. I think it should be spoke [of] in that light, not spoken in a lighter light. Hopefully people do that. I think that's part of it, the education on how serious it is and players who've been through it and talking about that."

While the NHL and do its best to try and deter players with harsh suspensions, Mitchell says in the end it comes down to the players' decision on making legal hits.

"I think Sid [Crosby] said it best: You have time to hit a player, you have time to think about how you're going to hit him."

Tanier?s Team Reviews: The Seattle Seahawks, via Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson

Any website can post "offseason grades" for NFL teams, mixing the draft and free agency into transaction soup, then straining it through the mind of some sportswriter who doesn't know who half the players are. Only the Shutdown Corner has the resources to get actual players, coaches, and executives from each team to evaluate their own offseasons! That's right: over the next few weeks, you will get transaction evaluations straight from the horse's mouths: straight talk about who was signed, who was lost, who was drafted, and why.

(For the satirically challenged: all player, coach, and executive remarks are made by an impersonator).

In this segment, Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll breaks down his team's offseason moves.

PETE CARROLL: What an awesome day! The sun is shining! The birds are chirping! Let me give a shout out to all the folks at The Circle Perk coffee shop for working so hard to keep all of us energized! And to all the crossing guards making sure kids get to school safely! And to the Seattle-area sewer workers: you guys are the thin line that separates good citizens from their own filth, and I cannot thank you enough!

Fans really need to get amped about our three-way quarterback battle. The front-runner is Matt Flynn, who got America totally stoked in that awesome Packers-Lions game in Week 17. Next, there's rookie Russell Wilson, who is short but fiery. Isn't that right, Russell?

RUSSELL WILSON: Grrrrrr...

PETE CARROLL: I love this kid! He's like a feral cat! And finally, there's Tarvaris Jackson, the Taylor Hicks of NFL quarterbacks. You don't like him, you keep expecting him to lose, and then bang! He finds a way to win a starting job, if not many games.

But enough about the offense. Let's talk defense!! We are going to have one of the best front sevens in the NFL!! Defensive tackle Jason Jones had a great, if quiet, season for the Titans last year. First-round pick Bruce Irvin may have seemed like a reach, but that is only because West Virginia had this crazy idea that a 245-pound speedster was a good fit at defensive end. I like my defensive ends Red Bryant-sized! When I am not being enthusiastic about everything, you can find me in my office drawing up creative defenses, and Irvin is going to be everywhere the offense doesn't expect him to be!!!

Irvin and Wilson had awesome rookie camps. In fact, all of the rookies had awesome camps, as did our parking lot attendants and the people who work so hard to make sure the office wastebaskets are clean enough to guzzle energy drink out of!! Let me dedicate my Song of the Day to the rookies: "Dog Days are Over" by Florence + the Machine! That's right: I'm a 60-year old man who listens to Florence + the Machine!!! Nicky Minaj, too! And don't forget Ke$ha, who is tiny and has a nasty attitude, just like Russell Wilson!!!

RUSSELL WILSON: Grrrr?

PETE CARROLL: Excellent growling, buddy!! Sure, not everything is mega-awesome just yet. We have work to do on the offensive line, where newcomers Frank Omiyale and Deuce Lutui will compete for reps. Lutui is a vegan now. How cool is that!?!? He's a 340-pound vegan, which is why we have converted two of our practice fields into quinoa farms. We also signed Alex Barron, who was famous for his false starts when he played for the Rams. I am not sure where he fits, but if he becomes an Extreme Juicer or militant locavore, I will make sure he has a place on this roster!!!!!

Okay, it's time for my Pilates, then yoga, some transcendental meditation, a frozen yogurt, a brisk jog around the lake while jamming to Adele, and two hours of Happy Days reruns!!!! You guys have been an ultra-super audience!!!!! I love the 12th man!!!! I love the Seahawks!!!!!! I love America!!!!!! I love life!!!!!! This is going to be the best football season ever!!!!!!

I have to go now. Russell Wilson is gnawing on Tarvaris Jackson's leg, and Lutui is grazing in the rhododendrons.

Junior Seau?s home burglarized just days after his death

There are people in or around the town of Oceanside, Calif., who just got an express trip to the place where the red guy with the horns and pitchfork does his business. There are few things more disgusting than a robbery that affects the family of a man who just died, but that's what happened last week to the family of Junior Seau.

Just five days after the great linebacker took his own life, some sorry excuses for humanity broke into Seau's home, went through cabinets in the garage, and stole a bicycle that belonged to a friend of Seau's.

Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Mata said that the stolen bike is gray with chrome fenders and a black seat, and there are 143 spokes in each wheel. Whoever broke in didn't enter the house -- just the garage. Nothing else was taken. The estimated value of the bike is approximately $500.

[Related: Junior Seau was gregarious, ebullient, hilarious and immensely popular]

On May 2, at approximately 9:35 a.m., Seau's girlfriend placed a 911 call indicating that she had found the body of the future Hall of Fame linebacker in a spare bedroom of his home. The death was suspected to be, and was later ruled, a suicide.

Seau, a 12-time Pro Bowler and six-time First-Team All-Pro, was selected fifth overall in the 1990 NFL draft after an outstanding collegiate career at USC. He played with the San Diego Chargers through the 2002 season, spent 2003-2005 with the Miami Dolphins, and then signed with the New England Patriots in time for the 2006 season. In New England's perfect regular season of 2007, he played in all 16 games and started four. Seau first retired after that season, only to come back and play for the Patriots in 2008 and 2009 before finally leaving the NFL for good.

"I'm going to go surf," he told Showtime upon his January 2010 retirement announcement. "Whatever happens, I can honestly say, that that probably was my last game."

[Video: Michael Silver's memories of Junior Seau]

Seau committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest, which is similar to the way former Chicago Bears great Dave Duerson ended his life.Duerson shot himself in the chest on Feb. 17, 2011 -- the method used so that his brain could be examined for symptoms of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), a trauma-induced disease common to NFL players and others who have received repeated blows to the head. Seau's family has considered, and reconsidered, donating Seau's brain to science so that he can be examined for CTE symptoms.
